The beginnings of the church building probably go back to the 12th century, in which a document of the tradition book of the Reichersberg monastery from 1180 mentions a "Gunther de Gerbrulteskirch". This entry proves that there was already a church in Geboltskirchen at that time. The small church, which was probably built in wood as was customary at that time, was then built in stone at the end of the 13th century and thus enlarged. Until the beginning of the 16th century the church was built in three stages. The original stone building included in its ground plan the present nave from the tower to the apse arch. The outer walls of that time were lower and had a flat wooden ceiling. In the course of the 14th century the tower was added, which at that time was about a third lower and covered with a gable roof. This first stone building was obviously made possible by the flourishing indulgence system. The indulgence letter from Geboltskirchen dated November 18, 1300 is the oldest document in the archives of the Diocese of Linz. Generous endowments such as the "Brotherhood of Our Lady" around 1460 and another indulgence letter around 1497 initiated the next expansions.

The church was extended by the 5-sided choir, the nave was raised and a vault was added as a finishing touch. The new structure was covered with a common new roof truss, which is still preserved in its substance and form today. The tower had to be raised at the same time and the gallery was built in.

Probably at that time the spire was also changed into the present octagonal shape. Even before the completion of the gallery, it was decided to extend the church again. With the addition of the Anna chapel, the sacristy and the entrance area, this project was realized and completed shortly after 1500. The fresco with the date 1501 or 1504, the date remained unclear during the restoration, proves the completion. The segmental arch portal and the large optical entrance gate date back to this period. Nothing is known about the original interior decoration.

From church accounts it can be traced that a mechanical church clock was already present around 1600. At the beginning of the 18th century the church interior was baroqueized. Bonaventura Schwanthaler was commissioned in 1703 with the rough production of two altars, which were set by Christoph Weissenberger from Haag. The statue of St. Nicholas, on the left above the pulpit, is still from one of these altars. The present neo-Gothic furnishings originally date from 1875.

The parish of Geboltskirchen covers the area of the political municipality and has 1305 Catholics and 80 people of other faiths or non-denominations.

The parish is headed by parish priest Johannes Blaschek.
