In earlier years, the primary task of the fire department was almost exclusively firefighting. Technical assistance was rather rare, and "service activities" such as the removal of wasp nests, etc. were completely unknown. With increasing technology, the significant rise in traffic volume, and the heightened safety awareness of the population, more and more tasks were added for the fire departments.
Fundamental tasks are:
Prevention and fighting of fires, as well as fire safety watch. This category includes all operations in which a firefighting device is used.
Rescue and assistance measures to prevent and eliminate personal and property damage caused by accidents or natural events (storms, mudslides, avalanches, flooding,…).
Rescue and assistance to avert and prevent hazards and impairments for people, animals, property, and the environment. Rescuing is the act of freeing individuals from life-threatening situations and bringing them to safety.
Conducting exercises and training to maintain the effectiveness of the fire department!
What is repeatedly MISUNDERSTOOD:
Goods and corpses, including animal carcasses, are recovered. In the press, the term “recovery” is often incorrectly associated with rescue operations for people. However, according to the fire department's definition, this is not correct. If a person or an animal is freed from a life-threatening situation while still alive, this is a "rescue" and not a "recovery".
