Swan Song
Franz Schubert's collection of songs "Swan Song" captivates with its incredible variety and depth in text and music. Günther Groissböck and his song accompanist Felix Hornbachner take you on a special musical journey. Many different facets of love, sorrow, despair, and hope come to life in this work.
Günther Groissböck
Günther Groissböck enthralls on the world's opera and concert stages – with a uniquely noble voice and breathtaking expressiveness, he brings his characters to life and makes every song cycle an authentic experience.
After studying at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna with Robert Holl and José van Dam, the Austrian bass was a member of the Vienna State Opera ensemble during the 2002/03 season and then from 2003 to 2007 at the Zurich Opera House. In 2002 he debuted at the Salzburg Festival, and in 2014 celebrated his much-acclaimed role debut as Ochs in "Der Rosenkavalier" directed by Harry Kupfer; in 2011, he made his debut at La Scala in Milan and – as Landgrave Hermann (“Tannhäuser”) – at the Bayreuth Festival, where he has since been a regular guest, among others as Gurnemanz (“Parsifal”), Fasolt (“Rheingold”), and Pogner in the acclaimed “Meistersinger” production by Barrie Kosky and Philippe Jordan.
As one of the most sought-after singers in his field, celebrated by audiences and press alike, Günther Groissböck performs at leading opera houses worldwide. He has a particularly close connection to the Vienna State Opera, the Bavarian State Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he has been performing since his debut in 2010 as Colline (“La Bohème”), among others as Ochs, Filippo II, or Landgrave Hermann. Guest engagements lead him, among others, to the Opéra de Paris, La Scala in Milan, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, De Nationale Opera in Amsterdam, as well as the Deutsche Oper and the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin, where in February 2020 he made a splash as Ochs in the "Rosenkavalier" in the new production by André Heller and Zubin Mehta.
His special enthusiasm for lieder singing reveals itself in programs developed with attention to detail and extensive repertoire knowledge, with which he is heard in London, Salzburg, Munich, and Vienna. Together with Malcolm Martineau, he created his current album “Nicht Wiedersehen!” with songs by Strauss, Mahler, and Hans Rott (awarded a Choc de Classica), with Gerold Huber the double album “Winterreise” / “Swan Song” and “Herz-Tod” with works by Brahms, Wagner, Wolf, and Mahler, as well as with the Philharmonia Schrammeln the Wienerlied album “Gemischter Satz”. Günther Groissböck is also at home in the symphonic realm, whether in Haydn's "Creation" or Shostakovich's 13th Symphony "Babi Yar" – he always impresses with musical expression, stylistic accuracy, and special text comprehensibility.
Concerts lead him among others to the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, the Munich and Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Musikverein and the Vienna Concert Hall, Carnegie Hall, and the Boston Symphony Hall.
He collaborates closely with conductors such as Philippe Jordan, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Zubin Mehta, Andris Nelsons, Sir Antonio Pappano, Kirill Petrenko, Sir Simon Rattle, and Christian Thielemann.
His recent DVD releases include “Der Rosenkavalier” (Salzburg, 2015; The Metropolitan Opera, 2017; Staatsoper Unter den Linden, 2021) as well as Beethoven's 9th Symphony with Philippe Jordan and the Orchestra of the Paris Opera, with further recordings including “Das Rheingold”, “Lohengrin”, and “Fidelio” with Marek Janowski, Mahler's 8th Symphony, and Anton Bruckner's Mass No. 3.
With his much-noted directorial debut "Tristan Experiment" in 2021 at the Theater an der Wien (Austrian Music Theatre Award 2022), Günther Groissböck faced an exciting new challenge, which found its successful continuation in his direction of the acclaimed new production of Verdi's "Don Carlo" at the Klosterneuburg Opera in summer 2023.
Future plans include, among others, song recitals at the Vienna Musikverein, London’s Wigmore Hall, Brussels’ Théâtre de La Monnaie, and Elbphilharmonie, among others König Marke (“Tristan”), Gurnemanz (“Parsifal”), Pogner (“Meistersinger”), and Sarastro (“The Magic Flute”) at the Vienna State Opera, Ochs (“Rosenkavalier”) and King Heinrich (“Lohengrin”) at the Berlin State Opera, Gurnemanz (“Parsifal”) and König Marke (“Tristan”) at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Following his acclaimed role debut as Boris Ismailow (“Lady Macbeth of Mzensk”) at the Vienna State Opera, he will perform concert versions in Boston and at New York's Carnegie Hall with the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Andris Nelsons.
His new song album “Männerliebe und -leben” with Malcolm Martineau featuring songs and cycles by Beethoven, Schumann, and Brahms, will be released in spring 2024 by Gramola / Naxos International.

Felix Hornbachner has already conducted at the Vienna Musikverein, the Vienna Concert Hall, the Graz Musikverein, and the Brucknerhaus Linz.
In 2019, Felix Hornbachner was selected to participate in the Riccardo Muti Italian Opera Academy in Ravenna. His conducting training was received at MUK – Music and Arts Private University of the City of Vienna and subsequently with Prof. Sophie Rachlin.
